Why a Dslr Camara Can Only Record 29 Minutes in Video Mode

DSLR Video - Length Limitation - Not because of 29:59 minute restriction

Hello DP Review Forum

I am in search of a camera solution that allows the utilize of telephoto lenses to shoot video and all the same pictures.

I was leaning towards DSLR because the toll for a consumer grade camera is with in my upkeep and there are several lenses beyond many price points.

My research so far has fabricated me aware of the 29 minute limitation and I tin can piece of work with that.

What I have found frustrating is that some camera'south will cease recording video when the 4 gb file size limit is reached.

Canon flat out says the video volition stop at 4gb and that y'all must manually start recording again.  When recording at HD (1920X1080) that is merely about 10 minutes. (But under 12 minutes if yous do the math)

Nikon also states the same.  Later about 10 minutes at HD the video will end.

I take a couple basic Sony Consumer grade video cameras that have a similar limitation (with file size) but will shoot continuous video by just starting another file.  When I put these in my video editing software, I tin can just combine the files on the timeline and it is pretty much seamless.

My promise was to find a DSLR that does the same thing (starts the next file automatically when the size limit is reached).  While likewise being able to take reward of interchangeable telephoto lenses.

New Catechism (EOS Rebel T-7) and Nikons exercise that.  But these are out of my price range.

I tried looking at manuals on Sony DSLR with interchangeable lens in the hopes of finding ane that would exist reasonably priced on the used market and exist able to record the full 29 minutes at Hd quality, without stopping.  I realize that would have a sizable carte.   Sony's expect promising but I could not become a clear cut answer from the manuals.

The first Sony Camera I pulled upward the transmission for is the SLT-A58.  They are going used on Ebay for nearly $250.

Has anyone used a Sony DSLR camera for videos?  Does it shoot video for the full 29:56?  Without stopping?

Any insight that anyone can provide will exist greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Re: DSLR Video - Length Limitation - Not because of 29:59 minute brake

The Panasonic GH5S can record upward to 65 min on full res. Maybe some of their less expensive models can do that too.

BTW, I saw yous used the term DSLR but so you mentioned Sony so I assumed you lot meant a photographic camera that can take interchangeable lenses just not necessarily a DSLR.

All the current Sony models are mirrorless, apart from the A99II just that is even more than the Pana and does have the 29 min limit.

Re: DSLR Video - Length Limitation - Not because of 29:59 minute restriction

If you lot are looking for an interchangeable lens camera (ILC), there are the DSLR or the MILC.

Very different to the by, today in that location are Total Frame (35mm), to APSC and M43 size sensor for MILC. DSLR has no more sensor size advantage over MILC.

In terms of video, IMHO MILC should still hold an reward over DSLR. There are actually a lot more choices across Canon or Nikon. Currently Sony and Panasonic should be better on video sector. Lately the Fuji XH1 has also earned a identify in the video digicam world. But beware of Sony's well known 4K overheating upshot, and Fuji XH1 is more a consumer grade model.

On budget wise, I might suggest you to expect at the Panasonic M43.

Earlier all, 4Gb file size limit is merely applicable to SDHC SD card. SDXC bill of fare will subject field to 96Gb file size limit. And most of Panasonic models (on European version for tax reason, could exist no more on latest model) are still subject to 29min 59sec restriction.

AFAIK for the Panasonic models I know, they will automatically restart a new recording when reaching either the file size limit or length of recording time limit (physically information technology will carve up upward the file).

The post-obit is an extract from the manual of Panasonic G85 FYI:

IMHO the nigh importance above all, non entry class models of Panasonic have adept IBIS (and DUAL IS if a compatible lens be used for actress stability) which is very useful for steady hand belongings video shooting on the run. They have no 4K overheating issue, and in that location are wide multifariousness of native lens to choose from Panasonic and Olympus roofing from 14mm ~ 1200mm, on various sizes and toll tags from consumer f/iii.5ish grade to pro f/1.2 classes...

Currently there are the entry classGF9 /GF10 , a vlogging centric G100 (both exercise not support IBIS), then the mid range GX85 / GX9 (in flat top range finder class gene) and G85 / G95 (in mini DSLR false slr shape), the flagship G9  and the GH5 & GH5s. They are in diverse size and cost tag, could exist cheap as US$500 for a dual kit lens set (e.thousand. GX85 & 24-36  + 90-300 )...

In that location are too FF MILCs nether Panasonic but could exist out of your price range.
